Catalogue Note:
"Rodin — The Thinker" is one of Edward Steichen's earliest acclaimed works. Originally from Luxembourg, Steichen and his family emigrated to the United States when Steichen was eighteen months old, eventually settling in Milwaukee. Steichen developed an early interest in art and photography, saving money to purchase his first camera when he was only sixteen. In 1899, Steichen submitted some of his photographs to an exhibition hosted by pictorialist photographer Clarence H. White, who was so impressed with Steichen's talent that he arranged a meeting between the young amateur and Alfred Stieglitz at the Camera Club of New York. Steichen was en route to Paris to study painting, but after meeting with Stieglitz, switched his focus to photography. Steichen would eventually become a prolific contributor to Stieglitz's magazine "Camera Work," widely credited with helping establish photography as a legitimate art form.

In Paris, Steichen visited the sculptor Auguste Rodin in his studio. Rodin, one of the most famous living artists at the time, was impressed with Steichen's photography and agreed to sit for a portrait. Steichen spent a year observing Rodin among his sculptures, eventually choosing to photograph Rodin facing his masterpiece "The Thinker," with the newly-carved "Monument to Victor Hugo" centered in the background. Steichen struggled with bringing his vision to life with just one negative, and ended up combining two — one of Rodin with "The Thinker," and one of "Monument to Victor Hugo" — to create the final product. Steichen said, "It is probably more of a picture to Rodin than it is of Rodin, because after all, it associates the genius of the man with that expressed by his work." (J. Paul Getty Museum).

Prints of "Rodin — The Thinker" can be found in many major collections, including the Musée Rodin, Paris, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's cataloging description reads: "The photograph portrays the sculptor in symbiotic relation to his work. Suppressing the texture of the marble and bronze and thus emphasizing the presence of the sculptures as living entities, Steichen was able to assimilate the artist into the heroic world of his creations."
