Catalogue note:
Thomas C. Green was the mayor of Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia) and one of the first lawyers appointed to defend abolitionist John Brown after Brown was arrested for organizing a raid on Harper's Ferry on October 16-18, 1859, in hopes of igniting a slave revolt. Green and Brown's other lawyer, Lawson Botts, attempted to save their client from execution by arguing that "insanity is hereditary in [Brown's] family." Brown, however, refused to "put in the plea of insanity," rejecting "any attempt to interfere in my behalf on that score." Continuous disagreements with Brown led to Greene and Botts withdrawing from the case. Brown was later charged with treason, murder and slave insurrection, and put to death on December 2, 1859.
