Description:

ENGLISH MAHOGANY STATION STICK BAROMETER BY J. NEWMAN, LONDON 19th Century, the glass tube, held in place by a brass framework, with silvered brass register plate bearing the maker's name and address, attached to a mahogany backplate. The height of a column of mercury is measured against a register plate at the top. John Frederick Newman is listed in Banfield's Barometer Makers and Retailers as working at 122 Regent Street from 1827-62. It states 'he made standard and portable barometers for the Ross Antarctic expedition and his meteorological station barometers were installed throughout the British Empire. He exhibited at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851 and was the leading scientific barometer maker of his day. The business was taken over by Negretti & Zambra in 1862.'
