Catalogue note:
In 1849, Edward Walley registered the design based on an 1842 painting, 'Fortune Telling by Cup Tossing,' by N. J. Crowley (which was engraved by C.W. Sharpe for the Royal Irish Art Union, 1842). Walley titled the jug "Hecate" after the classical witch. The design, renamed "Cup Tosser," is illustrated among jugs displayed by the Cork & Edge pottery at the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris.
