  • Provenance: Catalogue note:
A cabinetmaker/joiner with the name George Sharkey, Hagerstown, Md., is recorded in Hagerstown, Md., in 1803-1806 in the Museum of Southern Decorative Arts' (MESDA) Index of Early Southern Artists and Artisans. It is recorded that he died in 1806 at age 31 after falling from a horse. He is also included in the book, 'Furniture in Maryland, 1740-1940', 1984, G. Weidman, Maryland Historical Society. More excerpts from ads/notices in the "Maryland Herald & Hagerstown Advertiser" by and about George Sharkey can be found online on MESDA's website, MESDA Craftsmen Database.

No "Shirkey" nor "Sharkey" appears in the 1800 Washington County (where Hagerstown is located) census, which may suggest that George Sharkey moved there after that. (There is, however, a Charles Shirky in Kent County, Md., in the 1790 census; no occupation listed.)

It is possible that George Sharkey learned cabinetmaking in a coastal center before moving to Hagerstown. That said, "over 150 cabinetmakers and joiners worked in western Maryland before 1820... To further illustrate the point, some artisans who lived in Pennsylvania came to western Maryland for training, according to the Chipstone Foundation.

Given that names were often communicated verbally and sometimes written phonetically in the 18th century and early 19th century, it is possible this desk and bookcase is the work of George Sharkey, despite the stenciled name "Shirkey" on the letter drawer.
