FINE REGENCE STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED TULIPWOOD KINGWOOD COMMODE, ADAPTED FROM THE CELEBRATED MODEL BY CHARLES CRESSENT, CIRCA 1880 MOUNTS INDISTINCTLY MARK VERSO the serpentine molded fleur de pêcher marble top above a conforming bombe case inlaid sans traverse and fitted with two drawers applied with finely cast foliate scrolling framework centering two putti suspending a monkey applied at the angles with female busts on splayed tapering legs with scrolling sabots. The side with putti suspending dancing dogs;

The inspiration for the decoration on this remarkable commode comes from the models made by the great French marchand-ébéniste and sculpteur Charles Cressent (1685-1768) known as commodes aux singes executed circa 1745. Cressent made several pairs of commodes, each of which had two drawers applied with gilt-bronze decoration depicting children swinging a monkey. Examples of the commodes can be seen in the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon also has a pair of commodes and a pair of encoigneurs - h:37 w:63 d:27 in.
