FOLLOWER OF TILMAN RIEMANSCHNEIDER (1460-1531), GERMAN/FRANCONIAN LIMEWOOD FIGURE OF ST. ROCH, EARLY 16TH CENTURY carved in high relief and hollowed out at back, a stylized dog at his feet, traces of paint, h: 24.75 in.

Note:
The present figure contains many stylistic elements very reminiscent of Tilman
Riemenschneider's work. Compare the furrowed brow, downturned almond shaped eyes with defined eyelids, high cheekbones, and small mouth with pursed lips with his known works. Two noted examples are St. Jakobus, Windsheimer Altar in Heidelberg and St. Anthony Abbot, Harvard Art Museums
