Note:
Born in Boston in 1954, Ford Crull has been a seminal figure in Manhattan's East Village art scene since 1983. Crull's signature painting style, which he calls "neo-Symbolist abstraction," is defined by recognizable images hidden among vibrant, chaotic shapes and colors. Unlike the traditional Symbolists that inspired him, Crull prefers to leave his work up to the viewer's interpretation. "The ambiguity of the image is central to my expression of life in art," Crull writes on his website. Crull gained national recognition in 1989 when his work was included in the first ever American art exhibition in the USSR. The ancient relics Crull encountered on his visit to Russia would inspire him to incorporate steel framing in many of his works; he also frequently uses enamel, wax, paper and other materials that lend unique textures to his canvases. Crull's work can be found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the U.S. Department of State, among others.
