FOUR SETS OF BOOKENDS including pair of modern Chinese soapstone cubes with models of horses on top, a pair of bookends with portrait busts of Beethoven, a pair of bookends formed as a classical triangular pediment with columns atop a stepped base, and a pair of cogs, now mounted as bookends with a dedicatory inscription reading ' U.S. Naval School/ Machinery Repairman. Provenance: Estate of Admiral Thomas Greenhow Williams "Tex" Settle. Admiral Settle was an officer of the United States Navy who on November 20, 1933 set a world altitude record in the Century of Progress stratospheric balloon with Army Major Chester L. Fordney.
