Catalogue note: Francis Moylan Fitts was born to a prominent family in Blacksburg, Virginia, on August 20th, 1892. In 1911-1912 he studied art in Paris. Later he studied medicine, graduating from medical school in 1916. He joined the U.S. Medical Corps in 1917 and served in it during the First World War. Eventually he retired from medicine and went to live in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. This drawing came from a portfolio of his work and was probably done while he was living in France in 1911-1912. He died in Walter Reed Hospital on March 17, 1958.
