Catalogue note:
William Babcock was an American expatriate artist who was the first American to befriend Francois Millet; he worked with both Millet and Millet fils (son) in Barbizon. Babcock spent most of his life in France, residing in Barbizon for many decades in a small cottage. He acquired a large collection of paintings by the French artists of the Barbizon School and later settled nearer to Paris in Bois D'Arcy.
