Catalogue note:
Born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1850, Gaylord Sangston Truesdell began his career as an engraver. The artist studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and then, in 1885, relocated to France. In Paris, Truesdell studied under Ernest Meissonier, Fernand Cormon and Pierre Edouard Frère. He was drawn to the small towns and villages around Paris

He exhibited at several Salons in Paris between 1886 and 1895, receiving a second class medal in 1892, and a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1899
