the bowl of fluted oval shape with reeded upswept handles and rims, all above an intricate band of scrolling foliage and flowers, further above a stag's head and script initial monogram, gilt interior, the underside bearing script dedicatory inscription: "1753-1832, Gardiner & Elizabeth Copley Greene 17__ 186_/1810-1898, Charles & Martha Babcock Greene Amory. 1812-1881/1845- Edward Linzee Amory./1866- Copley & Mary Forbes Russell Amory. 1870.", 9 ozt

  • Provenance: This piece was given to Gardiner (1753-1832) and Elizabeth Copley Greene (1770-1866) around 1800, the year of their marriage in London before returning to Boston. Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of artist John Singleton Copley. His portrait of her, circa 1800/03, is in the Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, KS;
