Catalogue note:
The artist enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. According to Michael David Zellman, author of 300 Years of American Art, the artist was stricken by a wanderlust that carried him to distant countries including England, Egypt, and the greater Middle East, as well as France, where he was a pupil of the French artist Jean-Baptiste Isabey.
