Catalogue Note:
Martin Ginsburg (1932-2010) met Ruth Bader on a blind date at Columbia University in 1951, and in 1954 they married. After earning his law degree from Harvard he taught at Columbia Law School, then, after Justice Ginsburg's first judicial appointment they moved to D.C., where he joined the faculty at Georgetown University Law Center. Ginsburg was a well-regarded specialist in tax law and served as co-author of "Mergers, Acquisitions, and Buyouts," a semi-annually updated tax treatise. As an expert in the tax field, he held prominent positions in the field including chair of the Committee on Simplification of the American Bar Association's Tax Section, chair of the New York State Bar Association's Tax Section, and consultant to the American Law Institute's Federal Income Tax Project. He also served as a member of advisory groups to the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, the Treasury Department, and the Tax Division of the Department of Justice. In 2006, he was awarded the American Bar Association Tax Section's Distinguished Service Award.
