Note:
Born in 1915 Mexico City in 1915 to Hungarian-Jewish and German immigrants, Gunther Gerzso spent much of his youth with his art collector uncle in Switzerland, immersed in the worlds of fine paintings and the theater. Gerzso began painting professionally in the 1950s, and his style would evolve significantly throughout his lifetime. Describing himself as a "European with Mexican eyes," Gerzso was influenced by both European modernism and the culture and natural beauty of pre-Columbian Mexico. "I am a great admirer of this country - of its culture and landscape - that is what influences my painting," Gerzso said, as recorded in Diana C. Du Pont's 2003 biography, Risking the Abstract. Gerzso's earlier works are notable for their intricate geometry and distinct sense of space. "I consider myself a realist painter: I paint landscapes of the spirit, of the mind," Gerzso said. "It is a psychological realism, an image of a spiritual state."
