Catalogue note:
Hap Sakwa (b. 1950) is an American sculptor and photographer, widely recognized as a leading figure in the modern woodworking movement of the 1970s and 1980s. His narrative sculptural objects, created from polychromed woods and found materials, helped elevate woodworking into the realm of fine art. By the late 1980s, Sakwa expanded into pop art assemblages, juxtaposing Americana imagery, word play, and vivid color. In the 1990s he shifted his focus to photography, establishing a reputation as one of the country's most distinguished jewelry photographers with work appearing in Metalsmith, Ornament, and Modern Jeweler, among others. After retiring from commercial photography in 2014, Sakwa returned to mixed media assemblage. His works are represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum of California, and the Carnegie Museum of Art, among many others.
