Vae Victis, which translates as 'woe to the conquered' depicts the victorious warrior Brennus holding up his sword, the Roman eagle and the broken tablet 'SPQR' at his feet. According to tradition, in 390 BC an army of Gauls led by Brennus attacked Rome, capturing most of the city. The Romans agreed to pay a ransom of 1,000 pounds of gold if the Gauls would withdraw their troops. The Gauls provided the weights and scales, and when the Romans complained that the scales were rigged, Brennus threw his sword on top of the scales with the cry "Vae Victis";

Henri Gauquie (1858-1927) was a pupil of Cavalier and participated in the Salon from 1881. His works are inspired by antiquity and mythology. He is listed in the book of P. Kjellberg, Bronzes of the XIX Century;

This bronze is a reduction of the monument to Brennus cast circa 1890 for the Jardins de la Gare in Valenciennes, France - h:30.50 in.
