Description:

HENRY CLAY. AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED AS SENATOR. 1836
[Autographs] ALS. Handwritten letter, dated 1836, matted and framed

Transcription: 'Wash. 19th May 1836/ Dear Sir,/ I rec'd your letter of the 15th inst. and take pleasure, in compliance with your request, in saying that I do not think you are too far advanced to prevent the pursuit of your inclination to study and to cultivate your mind. People older than you have not infrequently entered upon a course of study and improvement and subsequently become eminent and distinguished. They have even learnt the dead languages; but perhaps it would be better that you should direct your attention to other objects. Diligence, perseverance and a firm resolution will conquer all difficulties. Wish you great success, I am, in haste, Your obt. servant/ H. Clay/ Mr. John M. Maguire.'
