Catalogue note:
Mosler was born in Tropplowitz, Prussia, present day Poland. He moved with his family to New York at the age of 8. Two years later the family relocated to Cincinnati. He studied art in Germany and Paris. This work was probably done when Mosler was in Brittany. "Mosler achieved an international reputation in the late nineteenth century for narrative paintings rich in detail ... the artist won success at the Salon exhibition in Paris for paintings depicting the rituals of daily life in Brittany. " (Cincinnati art Museum)
