Description:

HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE PUGH FAMILY, CIRCA 1880, WITH TRANSCRIPTS OF LETTERS RECALLING REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA large pre-ruled ledger containing detailed accounts of the histories of the Pugh, Williams, Collins, Slade, Whitmell, Alston, Dawson, Tunstall, Clark and Hunter families, compiled by Dr. Thomas E. W. Pugh (1850-1916) of North Carolina. Drawing on papers and oral traditions, Pugh drew family trees showing generations from first U.S. arrivals in 1665. Of particular interest are transcriptions of letters Pugh received that mention soldiers who fought in the American Revolution against the "British Wolf," Lord Tryon; engineers that laid the foundations of the fortification against the British at Old Point Comfort by Yorktown and a letter that mentions Elizabeth "Betsy" Barker (-1803) of Bertie County, NC, a reputed girlfriend of Thomas Jefferson who later married Col. William Tunstall of Virginia
