Howard Russell Butler was known for his luminous landscapes and scientific precision in capturing natural phenomena. A trained physicist and artist, he studied at Princeton and the Art Students League in New York. Butler gained recognition for his paintings of solar eclipses, which combined his knowledge of astronomy with a painter's sensitivity to light and atmosphere. His work often reflects a balance of artistic expression and observational detail, particularly in his coastal and twilight scenes.
