Catalogue note:
Imogen Cunningham was an influential American photographer, best known for her detailed portraits and floral still lifes. A Seattle native, Cunningham is credited with helping to bring a distinctly West Coast influence to mainstream photography. Cunningham was a founding member of the San Francisco Bay Area-based Group f/64, along with Ansel Adams and Willard Van Dyke, and her work was featured in the group's 1932 inaugural exhibition at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum. Cunningham would experiment with different photographic techniques throughout her decades-long career, including double exposure and montage printing. Her photographs were the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Dallas Art Museum. Her work is in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia Museum of Art and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, among others.

In this portrait, Cunningham captures her contemporary, renowned Pictorialist photographer Alfred Steiglitz. Stieglitz stands in front of his longtime partner Georgia O'Keeffe's 1926 painting, Black Iris, which is now in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A print of this photograph is in the Museum's collection as well.
