Description:

IMPORTANT ENGLISH NEEDLEWORK PANEL DEPICTING ADAM AND EVE, SECOND HALF 17TH CENTURY, AFTER AN ENGRAVING BY PIERRE LOMBART (1620-1681) worked on a single piece of plain weave linen with tent stitch used throughout, the under-drawing is visible where the embroiderer left inked outlines unworked, or where the silk thread has fallen out.

In 1660, John Ogilby (1600-1676) reissued a monumental edition of the King James Bible. Illustrated with ten double-page engravings, it was published by John Field, the printer to the University of Cambridge. One of the plates Ogilby selected depicted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden by Pierre Lombart (French, 1620-1681).

Adam and Eve, shown here flanking a tree with the coiled Serpent, are clearly based on Lombart 's engraving: note the stance of the figures, the position of their arms, Eve's hair, Adam's leaves, and the coil of the serpent on the tree. They are surrounded by various exotic and domestic animals including a lion, a tiger and a leopard, as well as birds, rabbits, a squirrel and a fox. The animals are based on pattern books of the time which were used for embroidery designs. See C. Ginsburg, 1995, "A Book of Flowers, Fruits, Beasts, Birds, and Flies: Seventeenth-Century Patterns for Embroiderers, Printed and Sold by Peter Stent. h:19 w:17 in.

Provenance: Maria Livingston Tillotson, daughter of Mrs. John C. Tillotson, whose portrait by Thomas Sully is at Winterthur. By descent to her great-nephew.
