ITALIAN MARBLE FIGURE OF PSYCHE, WORKSHOP OF CESARE LAPINI (B. 1848) "Abandoned Psyche," unsigned;

The present lot, attributed to the workshop of Cesare Lapini, is typical of the allegorical and genre subjects which Lapini specialized in and sold primarily to wealthy British and American tourists through his gallery in Florence. The Galleria Lapini exhibited an impressive number of statues at the Paris 1900 Exposition Universelle.

A larger (33 in.) version of Abandoned Psyche signed 'C. Lapini Firenze' and dated 1900 was sold at Christie's New York, 19 April, 2016, lot 63.

The literature is unclear as to when Lapini died, with dates ranging from 1888 to 1910 -
