*(the red wax seal on the verso: the coat of arms is that of the Paston Earls of Yarmouth; Arms: Argent six fleurs-de-lis three, two and one Azure a chief indented Or, impaling Pitt (?). Crest: A griffin sejant wings endorsed Or collared Gules. Supporters: Dexter a bear Sable muzzled, collared, and chained Or; Sinister, an ostrich Argent holding in the mouth a horseshoe Or. Motto: De mieulx je pense en mieulx)

Catalogue note:
A version, in the former collection of John Enrico Fattorini, K.C.S.G. (1878-1949), painted on copper, went up for auction at Christie's July 2, 2013 lot no. 15. In the essay accompanying the lot entry there is mention of this painting: "This picture (the painting sold at Christie's) is the prime version of a painting on panel, dated a year later, and last recorded in 1967 in the collection of James A. Murnaghan in Dublin."

    ** 1st Earl of Yarmouth amassed a collection of works of art some of which are depicted in a painting "The Paston Treasure," unknown artist, Dutch School, c1663, oil on canvas. Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. The family fell into financial difficulties and with the death of Lord Paston's father William the family line became extinct.
