Framed; lower right signed: J J Shannon; verso label: Berry Hill; Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1919, cat. no. 132 as "Mrs. George Dance" 60 x 40 in.; Mrs George Dance (nee Grace Sponge) was the wife of George Dance (1857-1932), librettist and one of the most important theater managers of the turn of the 20th century. George Dance was made famous, and made a fortune, for his work on "A Chinese Honeymoon," 1899 a musical comedy in two acts. He was knighted in 1923 in recognition for his services to the theater. This painting was made of his wife Grace when he was at the top of his profession.
