Description:

JEFFERSON DAVIS ALS TO BISHOP WILMER OF LOUISIANA Beauvoir, Harrison City, Biloxi MAY 20, 1878
Jefferson Davis writing to Rev. J. P. B. Wilmer D.D. Bishop of Louisiana, thanking him for his support and defense of Louisiana. Rev. Joseph Pere Bell Wilmer (1812-1878) was ordained a deacon in 1834 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alexandria, VA, and later served as Bishop of Louisiana. He traveled to England in 1863 to purchase Bibles for the Confederate Army and was imprisoned in Washington, D.C. upon his return. Renowned as an eloquent orator, he devoted the post-war years to rebuilding Louisiana churches destroyed by the war and restoring prosperity to the diocese. His circa 1867 book, "A Defense of Louisiana", is possibly the subject of Davis's letter.
