JOHN BROSS LLOYD

Framed; lower left signed and dated: J C Johansen 1936. Verso; label "Stockbridge Art Exhibition." John Bross Lloyd lived outside Lee, Massachusetts in what was known as the John Bross Lloyd estate. When Queen Wilhelmina of Holland came to America for a few months in 1942 to escape the looming Nazi takeover of her country, she was a guest at the Lloyd Estate. President Roosevelt paid a visit to the Queen and her daughter Juliana and grand-daughters Irene and Beatrix (the current Queen of Holland). The Queen's visit has been immortalized in Katherine Paterson's children's book "Blueberries for the Queen"

Other Notes: Johansen was known primarily for his portraits several are in the collection of the National Academy of Design, New York. He also painted numerous works for the Sculptor Daniel Chester French that are in the collection at Chesterwood
