Catalogue note:
Landscape painter J. Francis Murphy was celebrated for his atmospheric landscapes that often depicted the gentle moods of nature. Born in Oswego, New York, Murphy studied briefly at the Chicago Academy of Design before establishing himself as a leading member of the American Barbizon school. His richly textured works are known for their subtle palettes and poetic interpretations of rural scenes, particularly the countryside of New York and New England. He exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design, where he became a full Academician in 1887 and won numerous honors throughout his career.
