Catalogue note:
James Madison Cutts (1800-1863), son of Congressman Richard Cutts and nephew of First Lady Dolley Madison, was an official in the Treasury Department, serving as chief clerk in the second comptroller's office and during the Buchanan administration, elevated to second comptroller, serving in that office until his death during the Lincoln administration. In 1833, he married Ellen Elizabeth O'Neal at Montpelier, Orange County, Virginia.
