Catalogue note: John Wesley Little studied at the National Academy of Design from 1888 to 1896. During the summers he taught at the Eaglesmere Chautauqua Association in Lewis Lake, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania while during the winters he painted watercolors from sketches he made earlier.
In 1899, Little traveled to Europe the first of three times, visiting England, Paris, Brussels, and Venice. Upon returning from Europe, the artist settled in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, and became active in the Philadelphia and Williamsport art scenes, where his works met with commercial success. In 1905, Little moved to Picture Rocks, Pennsylvania, where he remodeled an old barn into a studio. He continued to travel extensively in California and South Dakota and exhibited throughout the country including in St. Louis, and at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, 1915, where he won a silver medal.
