Active in New York, California, and New Jersey. John W. Bentley was born in Patterson, New Jersey, and studied at the Art Students League in New York under George Bridgeman, Frank DuMond and Robert Henri. He moved to Woodstock, New York, to study with Birge Harrison and John Carlson and became a respected and lifelong member of the Woodstock Art Colony. The artist traveled throughout the country, including summering in Key West, Florida, painting landscape views.
