Catalogue note: Josephine Nicholls, a local painter, was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1865 and later on became a resident of Buffalo. She studied in New York City under Henry Mowbray and George Bridgman. Nicholls was a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, Guild of Allied Arts, Society of Mineral Painters, Zonta Club, Town Club, and former-president of the Western New York Branch of the League of American Pen Women, as well as a writer and lecturer (Source: Penney Art Center, Buffalo State University).
