Catalogue note:
Born in 1956, Kathryn Freeman studied art at the University of New Hampshire and obtained her Master of Fine Arts from Brooklyn College in 1981. Freeman began exhibiting her art with the Tatischeff Gallery in New York in 1983. She lived and worked in Warsaw, Poland and London, England, before settling in Chevy Chase, Maryland, in 1993. Freeman's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Jane Haslem Gallery in Washington, D.C. and The Painting Center NYC, among others. She has completed large scale public murals and is a writer and illustrator of children's books. Freeman describes her painting style as classical composition combined with magical realism. Freeman writes:

"My fascination with storytelling and treading the delicate balance between reality and dream is the catalyst for my work and a constant source of ideas. I love fairy tales and mythology and in my mind I am able to see the wonder behind everyday existence, and interpret the symbolism of ordinary things. As I compose a painting I try to create harmonious order out of the confusion and randomness of everyday existence - order in which form and content merge to create a convincing world and a believable narrative. My greatest intention, and reason for painting, is to express something both meaningful and truthful about the human spirit."
