Catalogue note:
Born in Athens, Georgia, Lou Stovall was an artist and printmaker who became an essential figure in the Washington, D.C. art scene. Stovall founded the screenprinting studio Workshop, Inc., in Georgetown in 1968, and frequently collaborated with artists like Sam Gilliam and Jacob Lawrence. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Phillips Collection and the Georgia Museum of Art. In a 2001 article for the Washington Post, Paul Richards wrote:

"He's been an art-world rock. Admired for his skill as a master printer, he also gets the sort of gratitude that car owners reserve for a reliable mechanic. The man's there when you need him."
