Description:

LOUIS LEGRAND
FRENCH, 1863-1951
ENTRÉE DE SCÈNE (STAGE ENTRANCE)
Etching, aquatint and drypoint
Lower right signed, numbered and stamped: Louis Legrand 27/30

Catalog note: Legrand studied at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon before moving to Paris in 1884 to train with Félicien Rops, whose influence is evident in Legrand's lively yet ironic depictions of the demi-monde. He exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts and won a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. According to Bénézit, the Moulin Rouge could almost be considered his studio, as he spent countless hours observing dancers, actresses, and singers in Parisian dance halls, bars, and theatres — subjects that appear throughout his more than 300 original prints, executed with remarkable skill, delicacy, and humor. A major exhibition of his graphic work was held at the Félicien Rops Museum in Namur, Belgium, in 2006, accompanied by a catalogue raisonné compiled by Victor Arwas.
