Catalogue note:
Louise Cox was the wife of the American painter Kenyon Cox and an accomplished artist specializing in classical figures and portraits of children. With the support of an aunt in Boston, Louise attended the National Academy of Design, where she studied under Lemuel Wilmarth, and the Art Students League under Thomas Dewing and Kenyon Cox. The Coxes lived in New York and both exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Society of American Artists; they spent the summers in Cornish, New Hampshire, the country's first major artist colony. Louise exhibited at major international expositions, including: the World's Columbian Exposition, 1893; Paris, 1900; the Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, 1901, and the St. Louis World's Fair, 1904.
