Description:

LUBOMIR TOMASZEWSKI (POLISH/AMERICAN, 1923-2018), STONE AND METAL WARRIOR
Catalogue note:
Lubomir Tomaszewski was a Polish American painter, sculptor and designer described in an obituary as the greatest contemporary Polish sculptor. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and was known in Poland as a ‘motion painter and sculptor'. He was recognized as a creator of modern design during his time at IWP (Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw). He also designed porcelain figurines which adorned many Polish apartments during the 1960s. The most popular pieces were ‘Girl in Flares', ‘Arab Girl', ‘Girl with Mirror', ‘Camel' and ‘Kiwi'.

He won the contest for his design of the surroundings of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, but his project was never realized. In 1962, he designed two porcelain sets: ‘Ina' and ‘Dorota'. His cups and pots without handles won first prize at International Exhibition of Industrial Forms in Paris and are now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

In 1966, he emigrated to the United States to pursue his artistic freedom. He lived in the U.S. for fifty years, and his work included figures in bronze, rock, wood and metal. Many of his works were inspired by Greek mythology.
