Catalogue note:
Lucille Malkia Roberts believed in the transformative power of painting for black empowerment. She viewed art not merely as political propaganda, but as "a source of positive imagery to undergird a growing sense of identity, pride, and direction" in the black community. Born in Washington, D.C., Roberts earned her BFA from Howard University in 1945 and her MFA from the University of Michigan's Institute of Fine Arts in 1947. After pursuing postgraduate studies in Mexico City and at New York University with Hale Woodruff, Roberts returned to Howard University where she continued to refine and impart her artistic vision. Influenced by her academic pursuits and travels, Roberts' artistry is infused with intellectual and cultural themes alike.

Roberts' varied, expressive body of work began gaining recognition in the early 1980s. Featuring a unique synthesis of figurative and abstract elements, her paintings weave together active brushwork with various symbolic shapes (SOURCE: Westbrook Modern Online).
