Catalogue note:
Mabel May Woodward was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1877. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students' League in New York; and studied under William Merritt Chase at Shinnecock Hills; Frank Du Mond in Old Lyme, and Charles Woodbury in Ogunquit, Maine. The artist traveled extensively throughout her career and painted many local scenes and landscapes. During the 1920s and 1930s, she spent winters in the South, especially Charleston, South Carolina. Her work is included in the Rhode Island School of Design Museum (Cypress); the Providence Art Club (New England Summer, Late Afternoon); and the Anacostia Community Museum, Washington, D.C. (Charleston; Blacks in Charleston).
