MARBLE BUST OF A WOMAN, BY LONGWORTH POWERS (AMERICAN, 1835-1904) signed 'Longworth Powers Sculp.', beautifully carved in the round with braided hair and wearing a pearl necklace;

Longworth Powers was the eldest son of the great American neoclassical sculptor Hiram Powers. His family moved to Florence when he was two. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point for a semester, but his father eventually had him return to Florence. He worked as a bookkeeper in his father's studio while his father taught him the basics of sculpture. He created a number of fine portrait busts and ideal pieces in marble and plaster but spent the majority of his career as a portrait photographer of the prominent men and women of Florence. - h:28 in.
