Catalogue note: Marcel Gromaire was a French post-Cubist painter, watercolorist, and printmaker associated with the Social Realist movement of the early 20th century. Born in northern France, he served in the French Army during World War I and was wounded at the Battle of the Somme. After the war, he moved to Paris intending to study law but soon turned to art, studying at the Académie Ranson, Académie Colarossi, and Académie de la Palette, while developing his own style through independent study of modern art. Gromaire exhibited widely at the Salon d'Automne and Salon des Indépendants and held numerous solo shows, including retrospectives at the Kunstmuseum Basel (1933), Maison de la Peinture (1957), and Musée de l'Art Moderne in Paris (1963, 1980). He was also known for decorating the façade of the Sèvres Pavilion at the 1937 Exposition Universelle. Gromaire spent time in the United States, won the Carnegie Prize (1952) and Guggenheim Prize (1956), and was later made a Commander of the Légion d'honneur and awarded the Grand Prix National des Arts. His work is held in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and Carnavalet Museum in Paris, and the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco.
