The sitter in this work appears to be the same as the little girl, dressed in the same red coat and bonnet, in "Candies" sold at Sotheby's 27 January 2007, lot 790.
Maria Brooks was born in Staines, Middlesex in 1837 and died in New York in 1913. She studied at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1881 she opened a studio in the Windsor Hotel, Montreal, and was known to be working in Quebec City in 1886. Sometime after this, she left Canada for the United States, painting in New York in 1889 and 1900. She was a member of the American Watercolor Society and the Society of British Artists. Societies with which Brooks exhibited include the Royal Academy (1869-90), the Art Association of Montreal (1883-92), the Royal Canadian Academy (1885-86)
