Originally from Philadelphia, Martha Walter studied under William Merritt Chase at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Her work was featured in the inaugural exhibition of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in 1987. Lauded as a notable American impressionist, Walter's paintings can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, D.C., among others).
