Description:

MAX WEYL
AMERICAN, 1837-1914
LITTLE RIVER FROM ROSSLYN, 1912
Oil on canvas
Framed; lower right signed: Max Weyl and on the stretcher titled in pencil "Little River from Rosslyn"

The painting depicts a view from the Rosslyn, Va., shoreline, across from Washington, D.C., of what was then commonly referred to as Little River, the channel between Roosevelt Island and the Virginia shore, looking south. The land extending into the river in the distance appears to be what is known as Little Island, the smaller island located immediately southwest of Roosevelt Island. On the horizon is a view of Long Bridge, at that time called the Railroad Bridge.

Catalogue note:
Born in Germany, Max Weyl came to Washington, D.C. in 1861 and established a small jewelry business on 7th Street. He developed an interest in landscape painting and began displaying his work in the windows of his shop. In 1870, Weyl launched his artistic career when he sold a painting to Samuel H. Kauffmann, president of the board of the Corcoran Gallery and publisher of the Evening Star newspaper. Weyl travelled to Europe in 1879, where he was influenced by the French Barbizon school and the Impressionist movement. Upon his return to Washington, D.C., Weyl helped form the Washington Landscape School, encouraging the Barbizon practice of painting "plein-air" among one's natural surroundings. He also became a member of the Society of Washington Artists, winning prizes in 1901 and 1904, and was honored with a solo exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in 1907. First ladies Frances Cleveland and Edith Wilson both purchased paintings by Weyl, and his work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Georgetown University, among others. To honor what would have been Weyl's 100th birthday, the Washington Star published an article with the quote: "To Max Weyl no place was more beautiful and more paintable than Washington and its environs. He was never eager to travel or explore. The Potomac flats, Rock Creek valley, the fields beyond the city limits contained for him all the elements essential to landscape painting."
