Catalogue note: M.T. Nordyke was a noted landscape painter and member of the Richmond Group of artists. He was a descendant from an important Quaker family that settled in eastern Indiana. He was born in Wayne, Indiana to David and Lydia Thornburgh Nordyke. Micajah studied at the Cincinnati Academy of Art under Frank Duveneck and at Earlham College in Richmond from 1865–1866. Nordyke co-founded the Rambler's Sketch Club in 1881, which metamorphosed into the Richmond Art Association in 1898, and later became the Richmond Art Museum.
