MILENA PAVLOVIC-BARILI
SERBIAN, 1909-1945
JUNO AND VULCAN, 1936
Oil on canvas
Lower right signed and dated: Milena / 1936

Catalogue note:
The daughter of an Italian composer father and a Serbian aristocrat mother, Milena Pavlovic-Barili first studied painting at the Royal School of Art in Belgrade. She continued to hone her craft through further travels around Europe, where she socialized with French writers Jean Cocteau and Andre Breton, and was influenced by the work of Italian surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. Pavlovic-Barili was one of the first and most notable Serbian artists to embrace surrealism, her work frequently featuring dreamlike interpretations of mythological and biblical scenes. In 1939, Pavlovic-Barili moved to New York City, where she illustrated covers for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Town & Country and other prominent publications.

Peggy Guggenheim featured Pavlovic-Barili's work in her iconic 1943 show, "Exhibition by 31 Women," at the Art of This Century gallery in New York. In 1945, Pavlovic-Barili suffered a heart attack related to an earlier riding accident and passed away at the age of 35. Many of her paintings can be found in the permanent collection of the National Museum in Belgrade. Her work was the subject of a 2021 exhibition, "Milena Pavlovic-Barili - Life and Dreams," at the National Museum in Krajelvo. Her childhood home in Požarevac has been converted into a museum, the Milena Pavlovic-Barili Gallery, dedicated to her life and work.
