Description:

PAIR OF COCKPIT HILL CREAMWARE POLYCHROME-DECORATED 'BASKET AND PINEAPPLE' RELIEF-MOLDED SAUCEBOATS circa 1765, Derbyshire, each side molded with a foliate scroll cartouche containing a pineapple growing in a pot, enriched in yellow, iron-red and green, l: 6 in. (2)

Provenance: With Alistair Sampson Antiquities, London, 21 June, 1984; Estate of Tom and Lee Stanley English Creamware Collection

Literature: For a teapot with similar molding, attributed to Cockpit Hill, see Donald Towner's "Creamware," pl. 46a, p. 103. Variations of this molded pattern were likely made by several manufacturers. For a discussion of shards found on the Greatbatch site, see David Barker, "William Greatbatch" (1991), pp 249-250.

Compare: The Harriet Carlton Collection, Sotheby's, New York, lot 153, for a salt-glazed stoneware example of this form, as probably Cockpit Hill.
