Provenance: Property of The Society of the Cincinnati

Literature: Jean-Jacques Pierre, le jeune, is recorded as a painter of flowers not figures (active 1763-1800). The gilding found in the coffee can and saucer can no longer be by Michel-Barnabe Chauvaux, l'aine (active 1752-88), as it is applied on top of the later ground color.

For an example of the oval sugar bowl of the same form, see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession no. 1976.155.77a, b.
